Dhaka Ahsania Mission

Dhaka Ahsania Mission UK works in partnership with Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), a Bangladeshi-founded and Bangladeshi-run non-governmental organisation which was established in 1958. Its vision is of a society free from poverty, in which everyone achieves fulfilment of their basic rights and improved social, economic and spiritual living conditions, irrespective of religion, political allegiance or ethnic identity.

DAM’s award-winning work with some of Bangladesh’s most vulnerable urban and rural communities is focused on non-formal education, livelihood development, health, human rights and social justice. In 2003, DAM’s Ganokendra programme of rural literacy training and community empowerment won the Global Development Network Award for Most Innovative Development Project.

Thanks to the support of numerous trusts, foundations and individual donors, DAM UK has raised over Ł1 million for DAM Bangladesh. We have provided support to:

Ganokendra and Community Resource Centres, a network of village development and resource centres in rural communities, giving access to information, education, skills training, health care and micro-credit;
Urban Community Learning Centres for working children and their families in slum districts of Dhaka City;
A drop-in centre for street children;
A Vocational Training Institute for older working children;
The Ahsania Mission-Syed Saadat Ali Memorial Education and Vocational Skill Training Centre at Shyamoli, Dhaka;
A Shelter Home and Vocational Training Centre at Jessore for women and children who have been rescued from trafficking;
A Vocational Training Centre at DAM’s Drug Rehabilitation Centre at Gazipur;
Arsenic-free tube wells in Satkhira and Narshingdi Districts;
Flood and cyclone relief and rehabilitation.

What your contribution could do

Ł1 will buy one meal for five children at the drop-in centre for street children
Ł5 will buy a set of books for a child for a year
Ł50 will cover the cost of a six-month vocational training course for a child
Ł130 will provide 6-months training, a sewing machine and materials to give a young girl the skills and opportunity to provide for herself and help her family.
Ł240 will pay for the installation of a tube-well that will provide safe drinking water to a community of 100 families
